Dave and Stevie and Eileen
My sophomore autobiography tells it this way:
This is the rest of the story:
Now You See Me
When we had our second grade photos taken and the day came to exchange photos with classmates, I wanted Stevie's picture so much that it tied a tiny aching knot in my guts. Somehow I knew that I couldn't let anyone see how much I wanted—even needed—Stevie's picture. So I waited till recess when everyone was exchanging photos and I made a great show of asking Eileen Korskovich for hers and Eileen blushed. She had blonde hair and big blue eyes and glowing skin and pink lips and everybody knew I liked her.
Everybody laughed and teased. And as she was writing on the back of her photo, I turned to Stevie and quietly handed him my picture and said, "Can I have yours?" He smiled and was glad to give me his as our friends laughed and chanted, "Davie likes Eileen! Davie likes Eileen!"
